Online courses and free for aspiring animators

Have you ever thought about creating an animated feature film? You are not able to, but would you like to learn?

It’s your dream but you do not know where to start? Now you can try to realize your desires thanks to a free course created by Pixar in collaboration with Khan Academy to enter the world of digital animation and then learn the necessary techniques.

Pixar and Khan Academy, one of the leading companies in online courses, have created Pixar in a Box, a course dedicated to those who want to experiment with digital animation!

To participate in the course just click on the Khan Academy website and start exploring the contents. The very interesting thing is that you do not have to register and you do not even need to follow the mandatory classes in a predefined order: each one can manage independently. The courses are in English so those who do not know it can have some difficulties but it can also be a good reason to learn!

These online tutorials allow aspiring animators to take their first steps in this world, and take a close look at the tools used by Pixar engineers and artists to create some of the most popular animated films in the world. Most of the topics covered begin with a general overview, followed by a second more in-depth lesson. If you think you are faced with simple topics you have a wrong path, since one of the sessions of the first series of videos is about the realization of a “homemade” Ray Tracer by a student.

Motion Tracking and Digital Art

Today the use of art has become maximum thanks to the internet and even the ways of making it have increased dramatically, integrating new materials, new technologies, but above all, new visions of it!

Felix Deimann the author of the video that we will see below, he wanted to pay homage to some of the biggest Olympic athletes of all time, doing a Motion Graphic work, based on the footage of their repertoire, looking for a harmony between abstract forms and movement!

Motion Tracking and Rotoscoping!

To get this result he took these contributions, and on them he performed some operations called “Motion Tracking” and “Rotoscoping”!

Motion Tracking consists in a digital analysis of the video content, which through the points called “Markers” analyzes and records everything that is in motion, thus saving and positioning the dynamics of movements in 3D space based on the calculation of the camera framing, which will also be recreated in 3D!

Rotoscoping is instead a “contouring” technique that is used to move things! That is, as you would do with Photoshop cutting a figure, but animating and modifying the mask, or the masks, frame by frame!

These techniques are today used to make 3D reconstructions to be placed in cinematic scenes, insert characters and fantasy creatures and make them interact with the man, but also most of the modern videogames are more and more realistic, thanks to these techniques.

You can do this type of work now with the most popular software: Adobe After Effects , Nuke , Motion , C4D , Maya , Blender , just to name a few.

The only limit remains the imagination and the ability to use the aforementioned software beyond the knowledge necessary to operate in this sense.

So from both techniques you will clearly get the necessary data to “hook” abstract forms, but also not, and give him that grace and delicacy of movement that we can admire in the video in question!

Good “Motion” to everyone!

Texturize a Lizard in 3D!

Hi pirates and pirates! Here I am back with a new article on Blender 3D all for you! What will I talk to you this time?

Still texturing! You never get enough

The last time we treated the UV and I showed you how to do without. This time instead I have in store for you something more interesting !

Many people have often asked me how he made the textures of this lizard :

It so happened that I was already doing a series of videos about this model ( here the article on previous videos). Now, we finally got to the texturization video!

Before continuing to read the article, take a moment and discover the event dedicated to InDesign that will immediately help you to work better, more and much faster.

But let’s get back to us!

What will you find in the video?

Well, to begin with I will show you some free material and that will surely be useful!

Like some videos that will help you better understand the various processing steps that I will show you. There will also be some add-ons that will allow you to speed up the management of UV mappings . And of course a nice collection of references to lizards that I pinned on pinterest.

Then we will go to the display of the commented timelapse that we can divide into:

  • Seam and unwrapping marking for the realization of UV mappings .
  • Creation of the basic node in Cycles with the help of a seamless texture (or seamless texture).
  • Texturing through the use of masks designed by hand to mix the various basic nodes of different colors. Here I will also show you how to use a black and white image as a stencil to speed up the process and get some interesting effects.

I would say at this point that we have enough of the chatter and that we can move on to the facts . So here’s the video ! I hope you can learn something new. Obviously if you have any suggestions to improve my techniques, write them in the comments below!

Last thing: if you are venturing into the Blender 3D studio, know that there is a group where you can share your progress and seek advice. Join the Facebook Group! People of Blender

It is called Popolo di Blender, and is managed by the undersigned. Take a jump if you like!

10 reasons why you can not do without a graphic designer

Hi pirates!

This article was written to be sent to your customers. I will not elaborate on the premises (maybe I’ll bore them) and I’ll immediately write down the reasons why graphic designers are important in the shortest and easiest way possible.

1- The graphic designer is the only one who can create your image

There is no other figure capable of doing the same. Or better: they can try all but in most cases nobody will be able to help you because you have to have specific skills, the result of study, work and experience. Here we do not talk about beauty, we talk about functional that is another thing and the graphic designer knows what he does.

2- Wrong communication hazard!

Addressing some improvised “designer” is not just wrong, it’s dangerous! At best you will not reach your audience, at worst you will lose the customers you had . Instead spread the quality of your services you will end up selling a little and close shop, sooner or later. Here the scratch is all there.

3- You do not know how to use the programs, he is … and not only

You can try but if you take care of your business you can not waste time doing a job that you can not do: time is money and first you will start to communicate well and first you will see the results.

Learning to use the programs is possible. Of course, to be able to handle them sufficiently, it takes time and derriere squared but everyone, with constancy, can learn. The fact is that doing graphic design does not mean knowing how to use graphics programs , that is just the tip of the iceberg. We need to know a whole series of concepts, we must have experience, eye, knowledge of the market, of human perception, we must have the target in mind and how it communicates. There are so many things to know: this is why there is this figure that is more important than what you believe. We are in the image age, if you do not do it well … stay out!

4- If you call one randomly to save money, put your company at risk

Someone you know (your cousin, your nephew, your friend) knows how to use the programs a bit, maybe you can save money by asking him? Ok, you’re practically giving a crystal vase to a 2 year old! So much effort , so much sweat, so much money invested to send everything to the air with a similar lightness ? Better not if you care about your company: you have to give it the chance to evolve, offer it the right tools to grow and not invest time and money and then kill it … because of the cousin!

5- The only way to reach new customers is to communicate with them: the designer knows how to do it

What is the point of having a top product, the best services or the most important collaborations if you can not communicate it to people? Which does not mean “telling it around” but it means “making as many things as possible as possible” (repetition is desired). Capture the attention, give the first information very short but fitting and then push future customers to inquire about other channels or in any case in the most appropriate way to their business choices. Because today people are informed and are full of advertising stimuli: how to expect to reach an increasingly complex public without a good communication?

6- The first contact with the customer takes place via communication

Design made bad = poor product. Too heavy as a comparison? Absolutely not! The lack of attention to design is a symptom of lack of attention to the customer, a symptom of poor product. Would you consider it if you saw a bad advertisement? Try to put yourself in the shoes of someone who does not know you and who, perhaps, does not even have primary needs of your product.

7- He sees things that you can not see

There are some things that non-professionals can not see. We are not talking about magic or chemtrails, but with measures that are used to activate the correct perception of the graphic design by future customers. The graphics, however, should not be evaluated with respect to beauty or ugliness (so everyone fancies, as Esther Perel would say) but with respect to functionality. And of course, if it does not do well at all, but this is another matter.

But let’s take an example.

You have a logo for 10 years. You like it, you think it’s well done: you’re also very fond of seeing it, you like it. Yes, because the shapes are a bit like the music: if you do not like a song, then listen to it then you get used to that sound and even begin to hum. The fact is that the logo is such an important element that if it fails to be remembered and does not express the values of the company, it is not doing its job.

Do you think you can see this? No, it is not easy to evaluate good communication if you are not in the sector.

The graph knows how to stimulate the senses and manages to extrapolate a way of being, a feeling or a series of values to be attributed to a symbol that surely will not be the illustration of what you sell, that they did 30 years ago.

8- Needless to make offers if you do not inform the public in the right way

Word of mouth or a makeshift flyer or the ad on Facebook are not enough. Strategy and design go hand in hand: capturing the attention of a particular target is the most important thing to do. Throwing ads into the crowd will not produce the desired results. Studying an audience and producing suitable material is the right way to make more money.

9- You need good material to keep for the future

If you produce good material from the beginning then everything will be simpler: the designer will produce the material you need while thinking about the present but also everything that will be useful in the years to come, in the perfect formats for printing or for specific uses and expected.

10- Pay to multiply the gain

Ask a designer who cares about the communication will enhance the sale: it will be more than paid for the expense!

Many believe it is a waste of time, others think that communication can wait. Are we kidding? Why wait to let people know what they sell? What is this diabolical choice? Hurry up, who arrives first (and better) can win the battle with the competitors … the others remain behind!

10 bis – The designer teaches you to have taste: listen to what he recommends

It is in your interest to succeed in enhancing your communication. Whether it is an agency or a freelancer, the person who takes care of the communication will advise you for the best and the relationship will eventually improve your point of view: slowly you will begin to recognize the rules to follow and you will finish , together, to collaborate and achieve increasingly important results.

Here, I finished the 10 reasons but I could continue indefinitely.

The advice is to be able to intercept a good professional, create with him a relationship of trust and start a continuous collaboration , so as to spend less and less time for communications. And pay for it without any fuss : it’s a professional and without him you’ll never reach a bigger audience.

I want to finish the article with a question: does the graphic sell fuffa? Yes, it would be able to sell that too, the important thing is to call a good one and collaborate better with him.

You favorite editing software! Fixed Layout, Fluid and interactive PDF

What is an ePub?

The ePub format is currently the standard format used for the publication of digital books : in fact, ePub is the abbreviation of “electronic publication” or “electronic publication”.

An ePub is a ZIP file that is divided into three sections that interact, forming what is a digital book . What are these 3 sections? Here they are:

Mimetype , which is essentially a text file that informs the operating system of how the ebook is formatted;

META-INF , is the folder that contains the XML file, the metadata of the book that is information such as title, author, and everything that can be useful for the research and identification of the book.

OEBPS , is the folder in which the contents of the ePub reside and therefore of the book . It consists of subfolders, each of which works to define and construct the contents of the book.

These subfolders include the one that contains only the images in the book.

What are the differences between ePub and PDF?

Both the ePub format and the PDF format have their pros and cons.

PDF is currently the most widely used electronic document format in the world , and you can create a PDF file with various software beyond Adobe. Microsoft Word is an example. This format keeps the design of our layout, as for printing.

Books in ePub format instead adapt to the device on which you are reading , the characters can be changed, shrunk or enlarged. It also has metadata. Obviously, the ePub is much nicer, and allows you to interact with the PDF you’ll never have.

But let’s go now, to understand the differences between fluid layout and fixed layout.

Last discount day to attend the Roman Indesign Warriors event!

Fluid layout

the fluid layout (liquid layout) is so called because the content of the book is adapted to the device , and therefore it is always changeable, as for a responsive website .

With this, therefore, you will have a thousand thousand layouts, one per device. You can not even foresee one because the layouts can not be created depending on the device that will receive them. Going deep into the question we can declare that the layout does not exist in the fluid layout. Just for words but we understood each other. I think.

If, on the other hand, you try to view a PDF book from a smartphone, the same thing happens that happens in a non-responsive site: continuous zoommation and premature blindness.

With the fluid layout not only will not need to make an appointment with the ophthalmologist but even you can also enlarge the characters, change the character completely or you can enter notes, bookmarks.

For this reason, one of the main rules in creating fluid layouts is the essentiality . Create complex layouts with videos, photos and anything else that can really affect the quality of reading.

The fluid layout reasons according to hierarchies or according to the elements it first meets in the layout. It is advisable to use this type of layout for fiction books, books with lots of text and a limited number of images.

Fixed Layout

The fixed layout, (fixed layout), differently from the fluid one (uh, but really?). It is advisable when, for example, our intention is to make a photo album.

The cage of the fixed layout, when it will go on the devices, will not change . Remaining fixed on each device must avoid incurring some problems planning carefully and a lot of awareness of an elaborate, often checking the type of character that must be clear and legible not only for the monitors but also for mobile devices for which we are carrying out the project .

So realization and deep verification for every device on which our file will be reproduced.

But here arises a question: why choose a fixed layout if with fluid we have less problems in viewing and interaction with the user? Simple: in addition to having, as we have already said, full control of the design we can add animations and interactive elements that, for example, are perfect on the iPad.

For the user to be able to interact gives greater satisfaction and in any case you have the possibility to reach different audiences in different circumstances.

The elements that liven up and make the experience more interesting and satisfying, especially for an audience that is not used to reading and must be amazed: think of books for the little ones or the fishing or sewing course.

We can not say that a fixed layout is better than a fluid one or vice versa: essentially everyone serves a specific purpose.

Dynamic and interactive elements in PDFs

As we have already said, with InDesign we can insert dynamic and interactive elements into PDF documents, such as links to external web pages, but it is also possible to integrate audio / video files.

The Bookmark

It is one of the most useful functions because it allows a quick navigation inside the file, especially when the number is high. To create a bookmark:

1- Click on the Window menu> Interactivity> Bookmarks ; at this point the panel related to the function will be available;

2- Click on bookmark to insert a new one;

3-To set the point at which to insert the Bookmark, click on the text with the “Text” cursor. Alternatively, select all the text you are interested in.

REMEMBER that this will also become the bookmark label by default.

4- Finally click on “Create new bookmark” in the Bookmarks panel.

Movies or sound clips

1- Click on the File> Insert menu and select the document;

2- to set the position of the audio or video file, simply click on the point in the PDF where the clip should appear.

With this option it is also possible to change the dimensions that this file will occupy on the page: the file frame is adaptable. We must do, but be very careful not to extend the frame too far out of the page margins.

The software provides a function that allows you to preview the document with the changes: just go to Window> Interactivity> Media. Here you can also change document properties based on actual needs.

Hyperlinks in the PDF

To do this you must:

1- select the text or item;

2- right click and choose the Hyperlinks> New hyperlink;

3- Enter the address in the “URL” field and click OK.

4- As a last step, export the PDF as “Adobe PDF (interactive)”. At this point all the elements of the PDF document will be interactive.

Illustrate the feelings that can not be described in words

Avocado6 is a Japanese artist with the ability to illustrate feelings. He does it in a rather macabre but very direct way. Fears, difficulties, appearances of modern society.

Most images start from the focus of personal feelings, from the head.

Games of personalization of emotions, of shadows, of facial expressions. The human body is perennially at the mercy of the world.

The acceptance of life, the fate on earth seen in a negative way starting from the awakening of the morning, tied to the bed with handcuffs.

The routine that kills. Do the vital energies finish? Here is the illustration with the girl on the ground, ruinous fall, with batteries that come out, probably discharged.

Tiredness, the pain of living.

Illustrate the feelings

Shadows that try to pierce the head, brains that protrude from the skullcap. Some point the gun at the same person who contains them, which in the meantime is lost in bad thoughts. And that does not even notice the external danger (which in reality does not exist in a tangible way).

The harsh reality of modern society

The modern times seen by the eye of a girl who takes a selfie smiling but around is all a mess, it’s all dark and dirty. The appearance of the present day.

A head immersed in the bowl of fish as if to describe the situation of someone who lives in their own world, a situation of profound asociality. This makes me think of the phenomenon of hikikomori widespread in Japan, which is the city of the illustrator.

Few images give us back, however, a minimum of hope even if with a final obviously negative. For example in the image of the girl who puts the little snowman in the freezer to keep it longer. We talk, however, always of a hope that will be broken: the puppet sooner or later there will be more.

The Twitter profile of Avocado6 has almost 700K followers

The info on him is very few: you know that he has written two books and that he can illustrate well. Of if he writes: “I am an ordinary boy who loves chemistry”.

In short, I would say that if we talk about illustrating the feelings, at this point the words start to be too many. Here are the illustrations! Let us know in the comments what you think!

News on one of the most popular editing software for 2019

Indesign 2019 news

Image result for indesign 2019There are news, as you well know, in the Adobe world. Today we deal with InDesign: why?

Let’s start here a path in which we will delve into some aspects of this fantastic software to get prepared and super-ready in Rome on 1-2 December. Who will have the good fortune to be of ours, will be able to attend the two days of Indesign Warriors !

We’ll find out everything you can do with InDesign: many people do not know the power of this software and ignore all the nineteen hundred fifty-three functions. No, well, all these are not, but it’s really absurd not to know them because they help in work and make life easier.

As you know, the 2019 version of the Creative Cloud came out on October 15th. Now we will discover together what are the news and improvements that should make the job easier.

“They should” because, as you know, Adobe is always in a hurry to present the new versions and in practice we become their testers, their lab guinea pigs.

All, in chorus, we always repeat that it is a good habit to keep the previous versions at least for the “test” period. Some even advise to keep them for 6 months or 1 year but I’ll be frank: I can not. After a few days, tested the stability, I uninstall the old versions in the hope that nothing will happen again.

But back to Indesign 2019

The news will surely have a positive impact on the workflow, on the layout design options and a marked improvement on functions that are regularly used in the daily workflow.

Importing comments from PDFs
You can now import PDF feedback created in InDesign CC 2019 to review it more efficiently and collaborate more easily with different people. Do you often use this feature?

Adaptation to the page
When you change the size of a document, the text and graphics are reconfigured in one click.

Properties panel
You can access the right controls, at the exact moment you need them, thanks to a more intuitive interface. In theory these are the most sensitive improvements for those who use InDesign and are used to acting in a certain way.

Suitable according to the content
With this new feature based on Adobe Sensei’s machine learning, images are resized and automatically adjusted based on context.

Visual exploration of fonts
It should now be easier to browse the different font classes and find the right font more quickly. You can also choose from several sample text options.

New features added include a filter to display only recently added fonts, an option to preview fonts applied to sample text, the ability to change font sizes while previewing a font and a “Find more” tab that allows you to add other fonts.

Design with colored SVG fonts
Thanks to the support of SVG OpenType fonts, you can now draw fonts that contain more colors, gradients and transparencies.

Footnotes in the tables
Now you can create footnotes in the tables and import them from Word documents. I know, it’s evil but we had to write it by force, be patient. Just go to Type> Convert footnote to final note

Spacing between paragraph styles
It is now easier to insert a spacing between consecutive paragraphs that have the same style. In practice you can better analyze if the spacing before and spacing after the settings affect the space between the paragraphs of the same style.

An option in the Styles dialog box lets you specify a value for the space between paragraphs that have the same style, which will only be used when two consecutive paragraphs have the same paragraph style. When the paragraph style is different, the existing value for Space before and / or Space after will be used. It seems like a play on words but I hope I explained well. No? Then I’ll try again (yes, next year).

Adobe font more accessible
You can view and activate the thousands of fonts available directly in the app. You can preview the selected font in your project, even if it is not activated.

Customizing PDF forms
Now you can change the appearance of exported PDF forms by choosing the fonts to be applied.

Instructions for printers
Simplify the export process by choosing whether or not to include specific instructions for printers.

Beyond these new features it seems they have worked hard on bug fixes. What to say: at least work on old ones to not add them to new ones!

A chat with Maurizio Pagnozzi

Image result for Maurizio PagnozziHere, I happened to meet the speaker of the Brand Design Tour Maurizio Pagnozzi since he came back to Italy to come to us. Two questions I could not do it! Let’s get to know him better!

Maurizio, you’re already back in Italy: did you have all this rush to go back for the Brand Design Tour?

Well yes, together with the Pirates we are organizing a unique event of its kind . Two days of training focused exclusively on the Brand Design. We will analyze all the fundamental aspects that lead to the design of a good brand and we will see how the principles of design are applied to this discipline. Participants will then have a targeted view as well as valuable practical advice. In recent years, Brand Design is regaining that prestige and that important role it had in the past in the creative world and understanding how it works is essential for anyone who wants to specialize in this field.

Let us know a little, tell us what you do, where you came from, where you live.

Today I deal exclusively with communication related to brands, so I’m not a creative that, according to the all-Italian vision, takes care of a bit of everything. Since the end of my studies I decided that specializing in a specific branch of graphic design would be the key to my professional career. I immediately loved branding and I continued to study and deepen its every mechanism. Today I live in London, a place that is a constant stimulus for my profession.

So, get dressed in London: do you miss Italy? What if you miss more?

In fact, after having participated as a speaker at the last edition of the Creative Pro Show and the visibility it has achieved, I often come back to Italy for training events. So no, I do not miss it. When I want to see friends and relatives, I need a two-hour flight to be with them. I take the job with me, it’s the beauty of this profession. All I need is a computer and an internet connection to be in touch with my clients from anywhere in the world.

Related imageThe Italian and London brand design: are there any substantial differences? Who has more taste?

From the beginning of my career I tried to compare myself with the international scene, overcoming what could be a territorial limit. So I would not make a speech related to a specific country or taste, not for my discipline at least. The purpose of a good brand is that it must “work”, its meaning must exceed the limit of the signifier tied to a given place. The aim of a good Brand designer is to choose the right signs to communicate it. That said, I can say that I have seen bad brands and well-designed brands both in Italy and in the UK.

I already know how it happened but others do not: how did you find yourself in the pirates? Why are we here that we are organizing half the world?

I met the Pirates for the first time at the latest Creative Pro Show. Immediately I was struck by the strength and energy of this group of creatives and their union. In those two days I have often been at their stand and I have been able to speak several times with some of them. Almost immediately the desire to work was born, we only had to find the right project.

And then, what happened?

Over the months I have known Patrizia Anna Coccia better, founder of the Pirates and I have confronted her several times with her about the creative sector of our country. I was looking for a person who would follow my training projects in Italy and I had long the idea of organizing a specific workshop on branding. I then proposed to take care of the organization. At that time even Patrizia was thinking about an event entitled “The pirates”, so it came very natural to combine the two things.

How come you love brand design so much, what’s more than some other job?

I love the idea of designing something that will last over time, something not temporary, the image that will accompany a company or a product for several years. And I love doing it in that phase when I’m not on the market yet. For this reason, the way to approach the project is different from the rest of graphic design. We must always have an eye on the future and be able to better express the values of a company through a few graphic signs. A continuous challenge that never lets me get bored.

Why is it good and right to come to your brand design workshop? What’s more than the others?

I do not know what others have, I know what ours will have . I will bring my experience of creative specializing in branding, my freelance experience and my experience as a self promoter. We will analyze the mistakes that are often made when approaching this discipline, share practical advice, tricks and secrets and we will tackle the creative path that leads to the creation of a good brand. All supported by the group of Pirates Charts and sponsors such as Fotolia, Adobe Stock, Exaprint, Blowhammer, 3D Connexion who have thought of exclusive promotions and surprises for all participants. I just have to say hello and give you an appointment Turin on 11 and 12 May or in Rome 8/9 October and Naples 11/12 October. See you in a few weeks people!

One of our favorite stockphoto site is dying

Image result for doors closing gifFotolia closes its doors.

Prima Fotolia, then Fotolia by Adobe Stock, now Adobe Stock. A death announced by that meeting with Adobe. The practice of big companies to integrate smaller companies is widespread: the big feeds on the medium / small, becoming bigger and more invincible, just like Majin bu did in Dragon Ball.

This growth is unstoppable, there are no other companies that, now, can compete with Adobe. There is much to say but I close here, not to make controversy.

Here is the newsletter that I received

Dear Patrizia,

We want to let you know that Fotolia is now part of Adobe Stock and the Fotolia website will close on November 5, 2019.

Adobe Stock offers a unified and advanced platform for purchasing royalty-free resources. Below are some features:

You can find almost all the content offered by Fotolia, as well as an impressive number of over 120 million additional resources, including images from the Premium collection of top artists, videos, design models and 3D resources.
You can purchase stock resources directly from the Adobe Stock website in the same way as Fotolia, but you can also browse and purchase them from the Adobe Creative Cloud apps (including Photoshop CC) and also from Microsoft PowerPoint.
As with Fotolia, you can search for images using keywords, but you’ll also have Adobe Sensei-based artificial intelligence (AI) functions to find similar images, search for images based on certain aesthetic characteristics, and more.

For any questions, see the Frequently Asked Questions.

We thank you for accompanying us in these 13 years of adventure with Fotolia. We look forward to welcoming you to Adobe Stock.

The Fotolia team

I’ve been a Fotolia customer for a long time, a company that has worked with pirates on many occasions. That’s why I moved on and I knew Adobe Stock well: thanks to Fotolia.

I read this conscious email of the excellent Adobe Stock service with the incredible integration it has with the tools I use every day, but Fotolia, especially what was the staff in Italy, was a company that gave me so much.

Image result for sad closing gifWith Fotolia I started working professionally , with Fotolia we introduced the fantastic Ten Collection , we made a beautiful event in Milan with Massimo Nava on creative brushes and unconventional techniques during Viscom.

The quality of the service was accompanied by an incredible staff. People with a thousand ideas, with unparalleled professionalism.

In short, I would like to thank all the staff there, especially in the people of Giorgia Millena and Lisa Sallusto but also the likeable Humbert Glaffo. People I have met on many occasions and that I will gladly see again in the future.

Thanks, Fotolia!

Let’s get ready for the funeral, maybe we’ll call Taffo.

Peace For Paris

Image result for peace for parisAs I write to you, I still have, like everyone else, in the eyes of what happened in Paris, the wounds are too fresh, there are still damages and missing persons. Now is the moment of despair, of mourning, of tears, of peace. And we pirates want to start from here, avoiding to yield to the easy temptation of the game of hatred, fear, terror, continuing to do our job. And we want to talk about this today.

Brand, how it is built.

Everything starts from a post on Twitter , where that great Bansky tweety tweets a post that combines two universally recognized signs merging them into one, which in my opinion will make people talk about themselves. It is a circle, with indistinct edges, with inside a stylized Eiffel Tower with a “leg” more than those we are used to seeing. At first glance this appears, but immediately we begin to think about something else. The upper part of the tower breaks the circular composition in a brilliant way “going out” for a short distance above the circle and thus forming a vertical line that we begin to recognize as familiar. Also the two curved lines, which constitute the tower’s arcinoto profile, are added to form two shorter diagonal elements. For an overall vision we realize that the new symbol is the union of two universally recognized: the symbol of peace and the Eiffel Tower, a symbol of Paris.

Composition and history

The composition in its simplicity is brilliant. The symbol of peace is already recognized and recognizable, the official story wants it born from the union of two letters of naval messaging the “N”, represented by the two short lines at 45 ° and the “D”, represented by the vertical line: ” Nuclear Disarmament ” , in fact. The same Gerald Holtom, creator of the symbol, later told that the genesis of the symbol would be different: it is the portrait of a defeated man, represented erect but with arms slightly open, imagine with palms forward, quote of the expressive strength of the farmer Goya in front of the firing squad. If we think that the symbol was created in 1958, in the light of what happened in Paris, the quote takes on the outline of a macabre premonition. But unfortunately it is the history of man simply studded with similar tragedies.

Of the Eiffel tower it is almost useless to talk about it, born in 1889 to celebrate the World Exhibition held in Paris that year, it immediately became the symbol of the city and of France itself. 324 meters of human ingenuity and metal, is one of the most visited monuments in the world and now a symbol. When you think of France, you think about her, it’s almost inevitable. Few perhaps know that the Eiffel engineer who designed it was the same designer who conceived the internal structure of the Statue of Liberty.

Expressive and evocative strength.

The expressive power of the brand is disruptive. The tract recalls Picasso in its evolution, and partly recalls the evocative lines of the preparatory cartoons of Guernica. In terms of composition, it is a circle, almost Giottesque, simple and direct, which immediately makes us understand what we are talking about. It is the ideal fusion of the symbol of peace and the Eiffel Tower: “Peace For Paris”. It is, in my opinion, the Columbus egg of graphics and I think we will hear about it often. It associates the verticality of the tower with the central line of the symbol of peace, curving the lines of the “N” of the same to merge peace and tower together. The shape of the tower is all, even if stylized. The stroke of genius, in my opinion, is the upper part of the tower that comes out shortly from the composition, creating the element of contrast with the circular composition. All told with a stroke that recalls the strength of metropolitan graffiti and the expressiveness of the Lascaux caves graffiti.

The creator of the brand

At first the symbol “Peace For Paris” is attributed to Bansky. A few hours later, the true creator came to light: a French artist, Jean Julien, on whose site we now find the logo initially tweeted by Bansky . Jean Julien creates an operation as simple as it is genial in his expressive prorompence. As a graphic expert, he merges two elements together in these moments that are very much felt by the French and, I believe rightly, all over the world: the love for peace, the one with the capital “P”, the one that sang John Lennon in Imagine. San Francesco, by Gandhi, and love for France, for Paris, a proud and wounded land.

The Graphic Pirates join the families of the victims in this moment of pain in their own way, as dreamers as they are: imagining a better world where one day they will all be the same.
